Official Gutzon Borglum Autograph signed, Copied Photograph 10x13 Inches

Gutzon Borglum, Sculptor, Mt. Rushmore Monument, South Dakota
Sculptor John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, Danish (1867-1941)
In 1923, Doane Robinson, the State Historian of South Dakota wrote to Gutzon Borglum about the possibility of doing a mountain carving in the Black Hills, South Dakota. Borglum came to South Dakota in 1924 at the age of 57 and agreed to do the sculpture.
He suggested doing a National subject of the United States with 4 Presidents:
George Washington; Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson.
Borglum had met and campaigned for Theodore Roosevelt, and by invoking that president's acquisition of the Panama Canal and Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase, the Rushmore monument became a story of the expansion of the United States.
In the summer of 1927 he started the creation of Mount Rushmore.
Gutzon Borglum (74) died in 1941 before the final completion of Mt. Rushmore.
