    Description

This antique souvenir plate features an image of the "First Train Crossing Missouri River at Chamberlain, S.D."  It measures 6 1/8" across and has no markings on the back.
According to some information I was able to find online from John Weeks, the first bridge to be built at Chamberlain to cross the Missouri River was a floating pontoon bridge built by the
Chicago, Milwaukee, & Saint Paul Railroad, also known as the Milwaukee Road
, around 1906.  (The bridge on the plate is a pontoon bridge).  Here's a description... "The
pontoon bridge approaches had fixed pilings and decks, and then a hinge mechanism to allow the channel deck sections to move up and down with the pontoon boats. The deck would split in the middle and the two sections could be towed towards each shore to make an opening for navigation traffic. The bridge was left open like this in the winter to prevent ice damage. Trains were restricted to 5 miles per hour when crossing the pontoon bridge. The pontoon bridge was replaced by a steel bridge in 1923."
The center image of the train and bridge has some wear.  This scene is surrounded by a floral design.  There is one chip on the back of the plate that can't be seen from the front.  It's a clean chip with no discoloration.  (See close-up photo).
